Russia, the huge landmass in northern Mongolia, is a challenge in itself. Mongolia was not only politically connected with its "big brother" for a long time. Just to the north, the Russian province of Buratia joins. The inhabitants of this province are the descendants of Dshinggis Khan. Irkutsk an old settlement of the Mongols. Baikal or Lake Baikal, is derived from the Mongolian word "Baigal" (nature). It was only through Russian expansion to the east that the Mongolians were expelled from this region.Read more
In the immediate vicinity of Mongolia, in the middle of the Siberian highlands, lies one of the Russian pearls - Lake Baikal. Baikal Nur or rich lake, is the deepest lake and also contains the oldest fresh water. Due to the climatic conditions, this lake does not have any semi-annual water circulation, which means that fossil water can accumulate at only four degrees Celsius. Hard to describe the fascination the lake has for everyone. In 1996 the lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site..Read more
The story of the Russian fairy tale once live, in order to understand the opposites, one must have experienced Russia and this in the literal sense. 8469 KM Landmass from Berlin to Ulaanbaatar, which is really something special. A vast number of different impressions remain, the understanding for Russia is sharpened. Transcontinental Berlin - Ulaanbaatar
The dream road of the East, that's how one could describe the route that leads from Berlin via the European and Siberian part of Russia to Mongolia.
Steppenfuchs Reisen is the first tour operator to have included this route in its programme for several years and has been running it successfully for years. This motorcycle tour lives from the variety, on the one hand, in the culture, but on the other hand also in the variety, which is put to the driving ability. As far as possible, this tour will always take you on interesting side roads, be it the crossing of the Ural Mountains, when we take up the challenge of the old M 51 from Omsk to Novosibirsk, or a really adventurous way across the mountain range at Lake Baikal to reach the Mongolian border. This tour is aimed at those who have a little more time and don't just want to "tear down" the route.
The route leads from Berlin via the Baltic States, Moscow, the Urals, many places in Russia to Lake Baikal, and from there to Ulaanbaatar. We have deliberately not chosen the southern route through Ukraine, as we have not had any good experiences here. It is difficult to tell which part of the route is the most beautiful, as each part has its own characteristics. The absolute highlight of this tour is without a doubt the descent to Lake Baikal, after having climbed the mighty mountain ranges that surround the lake. Here, the road winds its way down to the shore in narrow serpentines. But also in Siberia, the landscape you drive through is interesting and varied. You will visit the ancient cities of Kazan, Omsk and Irkutsk, which are the milestones of Russian settlement of the Taiga. The shortest connection between Berlin and Ulaanbaatar is 8,469 km. During this tour, however, about 10,000 km always come together at the end.
On every tour we try to explore a new part of the route. In 2020 it is planned to drive towards the northern shore of Lake Baikal on a rather unknown route. Russia is changing and road traffic is increasing rapidly, especially truck traffic. It's not exactly fun to drive between trucks. For this reason, we have adapted the route and will be driving as much as possible on secondary routes or on the old route. Here the extensive Russian experience of fox trips pays off.
This tour is easy to do with normal road bikes, but you can also use your own bike. In this case, Steppenfuchs Reisen organizes the return transport for you by rail container or, if necessary, also by air freight. For 2020 we have an extra container and can offer the return transport at a very reasonable price.
I am already looking forward to guiding you on this tour. Although I've driven the route dozens of times with my motorcycle, car and truck and visited many other parts of the country, it's always an experience for me. So I know my way around the track and can therefore assure you that all stories of a tense security situation in Russia are horror stories.
