The North

Larch trees, water and shamans...

 About reindeers and larch forests...

The area of origin of Mongolia, lies somewhere in the north, between taiga and grasslands. Two things are characteristic of the northern Mongolia, the Selenge and the Khuvsgul Lake. The Selenge is the largest river in this area and also the largest inflow of Lake Baikal. When Khuvsgul, the Mongols speak reverently of their sea and you can see him as the little brother of Lake Baikal. A geological perspective, the two lakes have the same origin. In northern Mongolia are extensive larch forests and has especially in the fall here feel like being in the Siberian taiga. Northwest of the Khuvsgul, is the southernmost reindeer area. Reindeer husbandry is possible only through the permafrost.

Trance journey to the gods...

Farther north, there is the Khuvsgul Lake. Around this lake, a nature reserve has been established in recent years. The lake is with its southern shore between two mountain ranges, which are passed to the tree line with Larch trees. Many Mongolians love to spend the summer months at this very clear lake.

The north is unusually ethnologisch not homogeneous. Here you can find many different ethnic groups. In the border region with Russia, there are the last reindeer breeders and especially interesting is the settlement area of the Tsaatan. Not only because they move north-most in Mongolia, but they are also practicing shaman. The shaman with his many tasks manages the Trance contact with the world of spirits. The basis for reindeer husbandry, is the extreme climate. The permafrost has marked the landscape in this region. For this reason, this area can also tour a few months a year without special precautions.

Find peace and a lot of Edelweiss...

In an outlying side valley of the Orchon, is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Mongolia, the monastery Amarbayasgalan (Happy Retirement). In this monastery lived more than 8000 monks. Unfortunately, the destruction survived 1937 only a few buildings that are being restored since 1996, step by step. Steppenfuchs travel offers for the northern part of Mongolia on two different tours, which run to all these attractions. Of course, we can also, in consultation with them, work out a special journey in which we can respond much more concentrated in this region.
