Winter Travel

Winter Travel

Living the winter in Mongolia, an experience of the rather chilly kind. Temperatures in the country fall well below -40°C at night, during the day it hardly gets warmer than -12°C, but still this season exerts a fascination on people. Crystal clear and extremely cold air in the steppe, a really very dry cold and an endless steppe landscape colored in absolute white are the stage where the Mongolian winter performs its spectacle. Winter lasts from November to April. This is the time when people sit closer together in the yurt, tell each other the old stories and in the evening sing the old songs of the steppe, which are about spring and summer. Then, when the temperatures have reached their lowest point, exactly when the first new moon in the new year appears in the sky, exactly then the Mongolian New Year - Tsaagan Tsar - is celebrated in the country of the nomads. A festival that has its origin in the time when the hunters set out to make rich booty in winter, which was then distributed to the tribe members, is the most important festival in the year for the Mongols. Experience the uniqueness of this festival, or just recharge your batteries from the tranquility of the Mongolian winter. The Tsaagan Tsar Festival is the prelude to a whole series of festivals that follow each other in March and April, each of which is a unique experience. Steppenfuchs Reisen has put together several different trips for you in winter.

Festivals

A month full of festivals in Mongolia. It starts with the Mongolian New Year, then continues with the big horse festival in the northeastern part of Mongolia, then comes the famous and worth seeing ice festival that takes place on the ice of Lake Khovsguul and right after that we have the "Camel Festival" in the Gobi with far more than 1,000 camels.

In the winter

It is cold, really cold at night the thermometer drops to partly - 50°C, but in the yurt it is cozy warm. Experience the Mongolian winter, which has many beautiful sides. Extremely clear and dry air, cuts into the skin, like whiplash, but compensates for this a landscape that is dipped in white to the horizon. And then, the silence, which almost hurts again in the ear. The rhythm of the day becomes calm and relaxed. Take this unusual time out and experience the uniqueness of the Mongolian winter. Live like the nomads in harmony with nature and the coldest season.

Lake Baikal in winter

Lake Baikal is the perfect destination for an unforgettable ski trip. The largest ski resort in Siberia is located on the southern shore of Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal, or the blue pearl of Siberia, has its own local climate and offers ideal conditions for skiing or snowboarding on the southern shore.

Rail travel

Eisenbahnromantik pur….

One of the last adventures on the railroad, the trip with the Trans-Siberian Railway to Mongolia. More correctly it should be called -Transmongolian -, because the actual trans-Siberian railroad goes from Moscow to Vladivostok. The Transmongolian, is only a cross connection from Ulan Ude to Beijing.

The romanticism of Tolstoy and Dr. Schiwago can unfortunately only be partially seen in the station architecture. The Trans-Siberian Railway is one of the main routes in the Russian transportation system and is therefore modern and well developed. The romanticism of the "steaming steel steeds", the "Tschainiks" in the train compartments, inspectors with twinkling brass knobs is over. Partly double-tracked and electrified, is the reality. Nevertheless, a residue of adventure remains when traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Abenteuer zum kleinen Preis.

Information

When traveling by Trans-Siberian, the trip becomes a program. It is part of the vacation and should be prepared as such. Whether the journey with the Trans-Siberian Railway will be an adventure for a small price depends on many factors. Certainly the cheapest option is to travel directly without stops, in the "wooden class". Due to the Russian railroad system, each stopover increases the price of the trip many times over. Basically, you can also say the trip from east to west is much cheaper than the other way around. An exact price information can only be given if we know the exact travel times, because there are many different options and variants on the trans-Siberian railroad.

On two wheels

Central Mongolia

Desert is one thing. Mountains, water and forests the other. If you like it rather "humid" and not "dusty dry", central Mongolia is the right place for you. Many legends and stories are entwined around the mountains. People have always sacrificed and meditated here. The "Otgon Tenger" (youngest son) has always been a place of worship.

Thr North

Der Norden der Mongolei ist für den Motorradfahrer schon eine Herausforderung. Berge, einsame Pisten und auch das Wetter können im Norden das eine oder andere Problem bereiten.

The West - Altai Mountains

The Altai Mountains extend in the west of Mongolia from the Russian border deep into the southern Gobi. It is a region with many contrasts and partly still today almost untouched nature.  This is the tour for those who are looking for a challenge.

Short tours Self-organized

Short trips by motorcycle to the area around Ulaanbaatar, or to central Mongolia. This is exactly the right offer for you, if you do not have so much time for a long tour in the country, but still want to experience Mongolia in its diversity.

Russia - Siberia

Russia, the huge land mass in the north of Mongolia, is a challenge of a special kind. Experience the story of the Russian fairy tale live once, to understand the contrasts, you must have experienced Russia and that in the literal sense.

Tibet

Tibet is a real favorite country for all motorcycle enthusiasts who want to see and experience something extraordinary. Our exclusive motorcycle tour offers you the opportunity to ride through amazing Tibetan landscapes and enjoy the view of unique sights like the lakes Yamdrok and Namtso as well as Mr. Everest.

Mountainbike

The alternative to the motorcycle or the horse, is the moving by own muscle power. Mongolia offers many interesting routes for the mountain biker. The options here range from extremely difficult to normal and easy. But one thing is guaranteed, asphalt road are not used, because they are not present.

Active On the way

Active on the way in Mongolia

The grass steppe in Mongolia has been home to a small hardy breed of horse for thousands of years. The people still live as and so their most important means of transportation is the horse. The horses are used as mounts or as pack animals. The Mongolian horse can be found in literature as early as 2000 BC and the Mongolian horse breed is one of the oldest on earth. The Mongolian horse enabled only Chingges - Khan the great military successes. The Mongolian horse is relatively calm and therefore an optimal horse for the beginner rider. Once you have made "friendship" with the Mongolian horse, you have a reliable partner for the whole trip.

Relaxed travel and hiking through Mongolia, means to get completely involved with the country, the nomads and the unique nature and mindful, conscious interaction with nature. On the hiking tours of Steppenfuchs Reisen we become one with nature and collect irretrievable experiences.

Combination horse / camel

Accordingly, on these tours you will not only sit in a jeep and enjoy the scenery, but you will cover part of the distance on the back of a Mongolian horse and, in the south of Mongolia, on a camel. The story of the crying camel, rather accidental, comes to life in the Gobi. Calm and majestic, the animals seek their way through the desert. Being on the road with the camel means having time - the slowness of being - creates space for other contemplations. Things that are often overlooked now come into focus. There is always time for a chat or tea. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Focus on hiking

Our hiking tour takes you to places off the tourist tracks, deep into the untouched nature. On the hiking tours over several days you will experience the country and the culture much more intensively than from the car. An experienced guide will lead you competently and build bridges to the locals. Let yourself be enchanted by the landscape, the people who live in it and the unique nature in Mongolia.

Short trips

Short trips in Mongolia

Short tours in Mongolia for those who are not so long in the country. Steppenfuchs Reisen has put together some destinations where you don't have to be on the road endlessly to experience Mongolia. Either in the surroundings of Ulaanbaatar, in the Gobi, or in the north to the Khovsguul Lake, or the short trip to the former capital of the Mongol Empire - Karakorum. One thing is common to all trips, we would like to introduce you to the Mongolian culture in the short time. So not just drive by, but experience in the middle of it. Our guide is the ambassador of the Mongolian culture. We do not only focus on the historical facts, but also on current changes.
All our short trips can be combined or each trip can be extended individually.

Day trips

Ulaanbaatar, or colloquially UB, is the political, economic and cultural center of Mongolia. The city is a young city, but still offers some highlights. Be it Buddhist, cultural, or scientific. The great Gandan Monastery, the monastery of the Tschojdshjin - Lama, the Fine Art Museum, or the Natural History Museum with the world famous dinosaur collection are only a few keywords. Ulaanbaatar is located on the southern edge of the Khentie Mountains, surrounded by the four sacred mountains, and the surrounding area is very suitable for short trips, where you can get a small insight into Mongolian culture. Terelch, or Mongolian Switzerland, with its unique panorama, or the beginning of the Gobi Desert can be reached in a very short time.

2 days

More time, more travel... Here we have listed for you trips that will take you to the near region of Ulaanbatar. The area around Ulaanbaatar, offers a variety of different landscapes. Often Tereltsch Nature Park is in demand and consequently well crowded. Steppenfuchs Reisen has selected other beautiful destinations for you. These journeys go over two days, with an overnight stay, alternatively in a Mongolian yurt with a nomad family or somewhat more comfort, in the yurt camp. These trips can also be extended.

4++ days

Even more time to discover Mongolia. With our four and more day trips, you have the possibility to experience e.g. the Gobi in a small round trip, or to travel to the former capital of Mongolia. But, we would also like to show you new unknown regions, which we have found for you, because only there you can still experience the originality of Mongolia.

Gobi

Thr North

The area of the Mongolian origin, is located somewhere in the north, between taiga and grass steppe. Two things are characteristic for the north of Mongolia, the Selenge river and the Khovsguul Lake. The north is unusually ethnologically not homogeneous. Haier are many different ethnic groups. The settlement area of the Tsaats is particularly interesting, not only because of their reindeer breeding, but they are also practicing shamans. The shaman with his many tasks, creates the trance contact with the world of spirits.

Central Mongolia

On the eastern edge of the Archangai Mountains, there is also the birthplace of the former Mongol Empire: Karakorum (Black Mountain), the old capital of the greatest empire of all times. Located in the Orkhon Valley, on the edge of the Archangai Mountains. Probably one of the most exciting landscapes in Mongolia is the fading of the Archangai Mountains to the west. Here the landscape changes dramatically, just now mountains with lush meadows and then pure desert. Only little known is this region of Mongolia. Not developed for tourism, the area offers a lot of freedom for your own exploration.

The West - Altai Mountains

Welcome to one of the most beautiful and most varied provinces of Mongolia. The northwest of Mongolia contains alpine mountain landscape - the Mongolian Altai - with the highest mountains in Mongolia. large bizarre drainless lakes, as well as huge semi-deserts are the other features of the west

The east

The East, is the homeland of Chingges Khan. Born in the northeast of Mongolia. From there he moved out to create the largest world empire on earth. The East is also the Unknown East. Barely described in literature, seldom traveled, it nevertheless holds a lot that is worth seeing. The unique combination of dry steppe and large lake landscapes make this region one of the most biologically interesting areas in Mongolia.

Russia - Lake Baikal

Russia, the huge terrain to the north of Mongolia, is a challenge in of it self. In close range to Mongolia, in the middle of the Siberian mountains, lies one of Russia's pearls - Lake Baikal. Baikal Nuur or rich lake, is the deepest lake on earth and also holds the oldest fresh water.

Individual on the way

Certainly, you don't have to travel Mongolia in a group. You can also do it individually. Then you are completely independent, can decide for yourself what you want to see, set the time limit and the form itself.

Rent a Car

Driving a jeep by yourself is one option how to explore Mongolia by yourself really best. Steppenfuchs Reisen has a suitable off-road vehicle for you to choose from. Our special highlight is that you can pick up your desired vehicle at almost any point in Mongolia.

Themes Travel

Theme travel

On this page you will find our trips to special topics of Mongolia. We have put together a wide range of trips to the Naadam festival in summer, the unique "golden eagle festival" of the eagle hunters in western Mongolia, to the reindeer people in the north at Lake Kuvsguul with their ice festival, the nomads and many other topics. These trips are in the majority very individual and special. They are more for relaxation and deepening of themes. For example our tour to the nomad families, where you get intensive contact to the people and experience how the nomads manage their daily life. You will be a guest of nomads for a few days in different regions. On this trip there is no organized program, but you decide yourself if you prefer to ride, hike or experience the daily life of the nomads.

Naadam / Eaglefestival / 1000 Camel`s

In Mongolia there are several festivals that you should definitely experience. It starts in winter with the Ice Festival, where one of the most attractive and biggest winter events in Mongolia takes place on the frozen Khusguul Lake. It is a unique opportunity to discover and explore one of the most fascinating and mysterious corners of the earth in winter. It is followed by the 1,000 camp festival in the South Gobi. A padang to the ice festival only in the desert. The big state naadam festival in July is then the highlight and with the unique "golden Eaglefestival" at the beginning of October, where the eagle hunters show their arts, then ends the festival season in Mongolia. These are all unique events and each has its own character.

Expeditions

Expedition, or discovery / research trip, is a journey into an unknown, or pathless terrain. At Steppenfuchs Reisen we don't want to be that extreme, but we do have some trips that are a bit further away from the normal adventure trips, also in the geographical sense. Steppenfuchs Reisen has some trips that lead to the highest mountains of the Mongolian Altai as well as to the untouched east of Mongolia.
